Zeitgeist is produced by students and staff at the International Media Centre (IMC), part of the University of Salford.
The IMC acts as an independent production company producing four strands of programming for Channel M, a Manchester-based television station wholly-owned by the Guardian Media Group. The channel is available on SKY (channel 203), free-to-air (local terrestrial signal 39) and on Virgin Media (channel 878).
Output generated by the IMC consists of Zeitgeist (cultural magazine show); Reel North (short films); Manchester Exchange (studio debate); and Hitting Home (documentary). IMC programmes regularly receive nominations at the prestigious Royal Television Society's (NW) Awards and, in both 2005 and 2006, won the award for 'Best Regional Programme'. In 2007 the Zeitgeist production team were nominated for a 'Best Newcomer Award'.
Content is written, researched, produced, presented, shot and directed by staff and students on courses ranging between Masters degree, BA, BSc. and HND. As such, the 'Channel M Project' is an invaluable tool for the incubation of new talent.
This unique partnership between the University of Salford and the Guardian Media Group dates back to early experiments in local broadcasting during the mid-1990's. Since that time, hundreds of Salford graduates have embarked on successful careers throughout UK broadcasting after having taken their first steps in television via the project.
